What to Buy on Dhanteras: A Guide to Brass, Copper and Bronze

Dhanteras opens the five days of Diwali, and in many Indian homes it comes with one simple rule: bring something new made of metal into the house. Gold and silver get most of the attention, but brass, copper and bronze have always been part of the tradition too, and they are pieces a family actually uses every day.

Why metal on Dhanteras?

The day is dedicated to Dhanvantari and to Lakshmi, and buying a new utensil or vessel is seen as welcoming prosperity into the home. Many families make a point of buying a kitchen vessel, so the new purchase is used to cook or serve food soon after.

Brass for the pooja room

If you want something that will be part of your Lakshmi Puja just two days later, brass is the natural choice. A brass kalash is used in almost every pooja, and a Ganesha and Lakshmi idol set is a popular Dhanteras purchase that stays in the mandir for years. For the lamps themselves, an akhand diya is made to burn through the night.

Copper for water

Copper vessels for drinking water are a very traditional Dhanteras buy. A copper bottle and glasses set or a hand-hammered copper jug is practical, and you will reach for it every day rather than keeping it in a cupboard.

Bronze and brass for the kitchen

If your family follows the "new kitchen vessel" custom, choose something you will really cook with. A bronze kadahi or a kalai-lined brass lagaan handi can be used for the Diwali meal itself. For serving, a bronze thali set turns an ordinary festive lunch into an occasion.

A few tips before you buy

Whatever you choose, the idea behind Dhanteras is a good one: bring home something that lasts, and use it well.
