The Art of Kalai — India's Ancient Tin Lining Tradition
If you've ever bought a brass or copper vessel in India, you may have noticed a silvery coating on the inside. That's Kalai — one of India's most ancient and important culinary traditions, and one that's as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.
At Nayi Naveli, many of our products feature Kalai lining, and we believe every customer deserves to understand what it is, why it matters, and how to care for it.
What Is Kalai?
Kalai (also spelled Qalai or Kalhai) is the traditional Indian practice of coating the interior of brass and copper vessels with a thin layer of tin (tin oxide). This process has been practised for centuries across India, particularly in regions with strong metalworking traditions like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
The craftsmen who perform this art are called Kalaigars — skilled artisans who travel from village to village, re-tinning old vessels and keeping this tradition alive.
Why Is Kalai Applied?
While brass and copper are naturally antimicrobial and beneficial for health, they can react with acidic or tangy foods — think tamarind, tomatoes, lemon, or vinegar. This reaction can alter the taste of food and, in some cases, cause mild toxicity.
Kalai solves this problem beautifully. The tin lining acts as a food-safe barrier between the metal and your food, allowing you to:
- Cook and store acidic foods safely
- Enjoy the aesthetic and cultural beauty of brass and copper
- Preserve the Ayurvedic benefits of the metal vessel
- Use the vessel for a wide variety of foods and drinks
How Is Kalai Applied?
The traditional Kalai process is a fascinating craft:
- The vessel is first thoroughly cleaned and heated over an open flame
- A flux (usually ammonium chloride) is applied to help the tin bond to the metal
- Tin is melted and rubbed onto the hot interior surface using a cloth or cotton
- The tin spreads evenly, creating a smooth, silvery coating
- The vessel is cooled and polished
The entire process is done by hand, making each Kalai-coated vessel a product of skilled craftsmanship.

How to Care for Kalai-Coated Vessels
Kalai is durable but requires gentle care to last long:
- ✅ Hand wash with mild soap and a soft cloth
- ✅ Dry immediately after washing
- ❌ Avoid harsh scrubbers or steel wool on the interior
- ❌ Do not use in a dishwasher
- ❌ Avoid soaking in water for long periods
Over time, the Kalai lining may wear off with heavy use — this is completely normal. When it does, simply take it to a local Kalaigar for re-tinning. This is an affordable service and extends the life of your vessel for many more years.
